World-first vinyl flooring study shows market explosion in durable floor covering popularity

Flooring Clarity has published the results of its latest consumer research study, revealing that the popularity of vinyl floor tiles and vinyl flooring has exploded in recent years.

By conducting a survey of 1,000 households, Flooring Clarity discovered that demand for luxury vinyl tile has actually quadrupled since 2014. Figures suggest that in 2019, over $4 million was spent on this type of flooring, as homeowners looked to elevate their spaces.

Vinyl flooring has also seen a sharp increase, with over $2 million spent on this type of floor covering in 2019. The survey discovered this is the flooring material of choice for busy kitchens and family bathrooms.

Reasons for choosing vinyl as a floor covering alternative include replacing damaged floors (50%) and the desire to have a more up-to-date interior (48%). Consumers also stated that the waterproof nature and durability of this flooring type attracted them to make a purchase over other materials such as hardwood flooring or ceramic tiles.

The research confirmed that 45% of homeowners reported an average spend of $1 to $3 per square meter of flooring, highlighting the cost-effectiveness of this floor covering.

Over 40% of survey respondents also stated that they fitted the vinyl flooring themselves, with more than 46% purchasing the flooring of their choosing online and having it delivered directly to their address ready for installation.
