Research shows THIS is when we buy Valentine’s Gifts

New research has revealed whether Britain is a nation of get-ahead romantics or last minute panic buyers when it comes to Valentine’s Day gifts – with some surprising results.

Leading personalised gift retailer GiftPup has studied several years worth of sales data to uncover when shoppers turn their attention from Christmas towards more romantic occasions. Its research shows that sales of Valentine’s Day gifts peak much earlier than may first be thought, with a big spike on the 19th January and an additional flurry on the 29th January on average. After those early bird shoppers, the next big surge isn’t until just over a week before the day itself right up until the 11th February.

Surprisingly, it seems like many shoppers prefer to keep their organisation skills under wraps with the retailer’s social media survey revealing 83% of us feel mid-January is far too early to begin thinking about buying Valentine’s Day treats. So, what’s the real story?

“We were surprised to see that demand for Valentine’s Day gifts starts so soon after Christmas – we expected February to really be when most people start shopping for their Valentine and it seems like many agree with us. That said, our sales data shows a very clear spike on 19th January, suggesting that there is a secret push to be organised and have the perfect present in hand well before the 14th February.

“What isn’t surprising is that Valentine’s presents continue to fly out the door until as late as the 11th, just three days before the main event. We’re also used to one and two day delivery when shopping online so this means there isn’t necessarily that sense of urgency and it seems like for those later to the party, there’s an element of waiting to find exactly the right gift.”

Earlier GiftPup research into Valentine’s Day gifting habits revealed that the average person will budget £16.31 for present buying, with an increasing trend for less traditional and more offbeat gifts that are meaningful but practical too.
