London composer wins best music category at the Aphrodite Film Awards

Multi-award winning film composer and multi-nominated songwriter, Ros Gilman has received international acclaim for his work on the British short film ‘The Arrival’ (written and directed by Annette Laufer), winning the best music category at the Aphrodite Film Awards in New York.

The bi-monthly film award brings together the best artistic film and musical talent from all over the globe to be judged by a panel of experts.

Ros began his musical journey at just five years old as a student of the renowned Gnessin Music School. A successful career as a violinist followed, which saw him perform across three continents, making multiple appearances on national TV and radio. Later, he was made second leader of the internationally esteemed European Philharmonic Orchestra.

After a hand injury that prevented him pursuing a career as a violinist, Ros reinvented himself as a composer, conductor and music producer, studying first at the world-famous University of Music in Vienna and then at the prestigious Royal College of Music.

In addition to winning the Aphrodite Film Award, the composer previously scooped the Audience Award for Best Music at the British Animation Film Festival and has received several industry nominations, most notably for the American Songwriting Awards.

Recorded in London, the soundtrack to ‘The Arrival’ was released on Ros’ own record label in October 2018. It has been aired on Pride World Radio in Newcastle, PBA FM in Adelaide and is also scheduled to air on Itel Radio in Argentina soon.

Those that wish to get a behind the scenes look at the making of The Arrival soundtrack can do so by viewing a two-part video on YouTube, charting the creative journey of this award-winning composer.

He said, “I’m extremely grateful that my soundtrack to ‘The Arrival’ short film has been recognised by the jury of the ‘Aphrodite Film Awards’.

“The film is centred around secrets, and one of the challenges I faced when writing the music, was to keep the suspense going, without tipping over too much into the genre of a thriller.

“I want to thank the film’s director Annette Laufer and producers Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor and Triune Productions for trusting me with the music of this wonderful project!”
