Leading Workplace Wellbeing Coach Says These Top 3 Wellbeing Trends Will Rule in 2020

With greater awareness of the importance of good mental health, one pioneering coach says three wellbeing trends will rule in 2020 as employers and workers look set to invest more time than ever in boosting their health, happiness and confidence.

Kate Bishop, who works with both individuals and organisations to empower them to facilitate positive change during periods of uncertainty and disruption, believes that restful sleep, rhythmic breathing, and social media solitude have fast become some of the most effective techniques for improving mental state and creating a calm, stress-free state of mind.

With the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics suggesting that 71% of women and 64% of men in the UK use the internet to engage through social media platforms, social media solitude is anticipated to become a hot topic and subject of heavy debate in the near future. To date, a number of studies have been published which highlight a correlation between social media usage and poor mental health, partly through lifestyle comparison, and partly through the emission of damaging blue light from mobile devices.

She says, “Social media is definitely a big one for me because I see so many respected coaches advocating for social media solitude yet failing to practice what they preach. I know how easily a quick check of Instagram can result in 45 minutes of continuous scrolling, so I use the same tools that I recommend to my clients myself, like Flipd for mobile and Cold Turkey when I’m at my desktop.”

Linda Geddes’ recently published book Chasing the Sun is believed to be a major driver behind the emerging restful sleep trend. The book explores the connection between exhaustion and wellbeing, mental health, performance at work, and even personal relationships. Bishop advises that healthy sleeping patterns can be implemented using apps like Sleep Genius and Sleep Time.

Geddes’ book also explores the relationship between mental health and rhythmic breathing; another of Bishop’s top wellbeing trends for the coming year.  She adds, “I find I tend to get funny looks when I suggest breathing, as it’s something that we do subconsciously every moment of the day, but it can be surprising just how many people aren’t doing it properly. The coach recommends the ‘4, 7, 8’ breathing exercise, inhaling through the nose for 4 counts, holding the breath for 7 counts, and exhaling through the mouth for 8 counts to help soothe and calm the busy brain.
