Online Tool Calculates WHO-Recommended Sanitizer Concentrations

A new digital calculations tool to help businesses create World Health Organization-approved hand sanitizer has been made available online for free. The revolutionary Hand Sanitizer Proportions Calculator instantly and automatically determines the concentration of alcohol required to be effective as determined by the proportions of the other components. The tool has been developed by the leading IT professionals behind Good Calculators; a platform that offers free online calculators for a variety of purposes, and which can be used in domestic and commercial applications.

The calculator has been designed and developed using the two WHO-recommended hand sanitizer formulations that have been rigorously tested by WHO reference laboratories according to EN standards. By using the tool to calculate the percentage of active ingredients, businesses can ensure that they are developing products that are not only safe and effective for public use, but which also meet the criteria set out by the United Nations.

The simple tool can be used simply by selecting the primary component – ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol – and component volume. The calculator works to automatically determine the glycerol, hydrogen peroxide, and water volume to generate final concentrations of 75% isopropyl alcohol, 0.125% glycerol, and 1.45% hydrogen peroxide, or 80% ethyl alcohol, 0.125% glycerol, and 1.45% hydrogen peroxide to meet regulations. Volume can be inputted and calculated in a range of units, including both UK and US measurements.

“With demand for hand sanitizer rising rapidly, it’s fantastic to see so many businesses all over the world wanting to do their part and help ensure that everyone has access to the essential hygiene products they need to keep themselves, and others, safe at this time” says Good Calculators Author and Developer, John Sanders. “However, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that alcohol concentrations below 60% are much less effective, with best results from concentrations between 60% and 95%.

“That’s really what’s driven us to create this new calculator, helping to ensure that businesses have free and easy access to the vital information they need to create beneficial products that can have a big impact on viral spread.”

The introduction of the new tool comes at a time when a number of businesses across the world have been diversifying operations and shifting into hand sanitizer production at scale. As a direct result of the global COVID-19 outbreak, demand for hand sanitizer increased by 1400% between December 2019 and February 2020 as the WHO issued evidence that ‘alcohol-based handrubs are the only known means for rapidly and effectively inactivating a wide array of potentially harmful microorganisms on hands’. The organization also recommends local production of their two published formulations in circumstances where availability is low.

Budweiser, the Pernod Ricard family, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, Portobello Road Gin, and BrewDog are among the huge number of breweries and distilleries that have stepped up during crisis to help boost the supply of essential hygiene and healthcare items that can slow the spread of the virus.

The Hand Sanitizer Proportions Calculator is just the latest in a growing collection of prediction tools. The Good Calculators platform also offers financial, date and time, engineering, mathematical, logistics, sales, conversions, and sports and health calculators. The platform hit headlines earlier this year for its introduction of a new Cold Water Survival Time Calculator, designed to minimize cold water accidents around the world.
