Sustainable New Start-Up Debuts Cosy Duvet Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles

An innovative British start-up has given the humble duvet a modern, sustainable makeover. Duvet Hog’s brand new The Original uses 50-100 recycled plastic water bottles per duvet to create a cosy, lightweight, breathable, cruelty-free and eco-friendly filling.

Duvet Hog’s process sees plastic bottles spun into miniscule silky soft fibres, seven times finer than an eyelash. The downy, vegan filling has a marshmallow like softness and is as light as a cloud, offering a cosy, snugly covering year round.

Phillippa Barraclough, founder of Duvet Hog says, “Like so many others, I have grown increasingly concerned about climate change and the state of the planet and was keen to do my bit. Extensive research led us to a revolutionary, hypoallergenic solution that’s kind to animals; a fine-spun, fibre filling made from discarded plastic bottles. It’s this that sets Duvet Hog apart.

“As a brand, our mission is to be earth-friendly. Traditionally, the world of filled-bedding is one of cotton and down, neither of which is sustainable. We wish to lessen our dependence on natural raw materials and take a positive step towards more sustainable options, which is why we use recycled water bottles, of which there is currently no shortage.”

Each Duvet Hog duvet is soft, light and fluffy and produced in a zero waste eco-factory which uses 100% renewable energy. The unique nature of the filling isn’t the only thing which sets The Original apart.

Barraclough adds, “To be more sustainable, it’s also important to make products that last longer. When it comes to duvets, it can be time consuming and expensive to get them cleaned as it usually involves a trip to the dry cleaners. For many, it’s easier to throw the duvet away and buy a new one when it gets dirty or something is spilt on it. Duvet Hog is different. Even the super king size can be popped in to the washing machine at home when it needs a refresh, rather than thrown away. It can be dried on a line or in the dryer. The sumptuous, snugly filling stays cosy, wash after wash so our duvets have a longer lifespan than is the norm.”

The Original is available in single, double, king and super king sizes and year round (10.5 tog), winter warm (13.5 tog) and summer warm (4.5 tog) options. Prices start from £50 with a risk free, 30 night at-home trial and two year guarantee.
