Is practical the new romantic this Valentine’s Day?

A leading gift retailer says that practical could be the new romantic this Valentine’s Day as an analysis of its most popular products suggests that gift givers have more than romance on their mind.

GiftPup, which specialises in personalised gifts for all the family, has unwrapped its most in-demand items from those who wish to woo their other halves on 14th February. The research revealed that far from the expected boxes of chocolate or items of jewellery, the most sought after gifts were unusual with function as important as form. Analysis shows that the most popular products are a couple’s initial doormat to welcome visitors into the home, a wooden heart shaped dish for storing keys, loose change or smaller items of jewellery and a watch and cufflinks box for safe storage of favourite accessories.

Emily Ford, GiftPup product manager, said, “We’ve been carrying out a lot of research to better understand shopper habits this Valentine’s Day and were surprised to see that our top sellers are things that have a clear practical aspect rather than being purely romantic. We were surprised to see the doormat so high up for example but you could say that this shows an additional element of thought, with givers gifting something that is needed and can serve a purpose.

“Another aspect of our research was into budgets, with the average order value £16.50. This too suggests shoppers are feeling a little more cautious and sticking to a set spending limit rather than going all out on a big romantic gesture. The great thing about a personalised gift is that it can be made to feel special, even when it’s something that is practical and not traditionally romantic without spending a small fortune.”
