HOBA Confirms The Water Cleanup Challenge on Shem Creek Will Go Ahead This Month Following Irma Recovery

HOBA, the ‘Hop on a Boat Anywhere’ mobile app has confirmed that its Water Cleanup Challenge, in observation of International Coastal Cleanup Day, will take place later this month on Shem Creek (SC) after Hurricane Irma forced the original event to be postponed.

The Challenge, which will take place on Saturday, October 21 is an eco-mission with a difference. With live music, a Captain’s party and $3000 worth of prizes up for grabs, HOBA’s Water Cleanup Challenge invites boaters and paddle boarders to turn trash into cash by collecting the most ocean litter. Working in teams, boaters and paddle boarders will start the clean-up at 10am from Red’s Ice House on Shem Creek, Mt Pleasant.

The Water Cleanup Challenge will be structured like a fishing tournament – after collecting their trash bags from Red’s, each team will have the entire day to clean up Charleston’s historic waterways. The top three boats and top three paddle boarders bringing back the most trash at 4.00pm will share over $3000 in cash and prizes donated by local businesses.

HOBA founder, David Yates said, “The Water Cleanup Challenge was originally planned for International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 16th, but was rescheduled so that residents could take care of their own homes and community following Hurricane Irma. We still have tons of debris and trash in the water and marsh. Now, we would like to challenge everyone to take part, invite their friends, spread the word and do whatever they can to help this awesome cause! Let’s get everyone together to help clean up our waterways.”

The Challenge will kick off on Friday, October 20th at 7:00pm, with all pre-registered teams invited to a Captain’s Party at Red’s Icehouse – a BuzzFeed top 50 US bar and best waterfront bar in CHS winner since 2003. The following morning on Saturday 10/21 the Challenge begins at 10-11am from Red’s.

International Coastal Cleanup is a global volunteer movement to protect the ocean. Almost 12 million people have taken part around the world, collecting and tracking ocean trash such as plastic beverage bottles, grocery bags, straws and food wrappers. In 2016, more than eight million kilograms of ocean trash was collected by 800,000 volunteers as part of International Coastal Cleanup.
